4 Cool New Google Maps Features Coming Your Way

Google Maps will soon contain much more information and be more apparent. Google is going to show you details about sidewalk crossings and more. You will know more about busy areas in the city. Here is an overview of the new features available in the coming months. All the Google Maps features that are coming soon are also mentioned here.

1. Focus on Live View

During the Google I/O event, Google made it clear that it will focus on its Live View feature in Maps. A ‘Live’ button on the Maps home screen allows you to look around you using your phone’s camera. It’s an augmented reality feature that also works in conjunction with navigation.

You will see the name of relevant places around you in Live View on the screen from now on. If you tap on a place, you will get relevant information in a pop-up, such as the name of that place, the review score, opening hours, and info about the crowds. If you press the pop-up again, you will see all the details about that place.

2. Detailed maps

In August last year, it became known that Google Maps is working on a new and detailed look of maps. In addition to the usual street map, you also get the display of footpaths, pedestrian crossings, and traffic lights. The proportions between sidewalks and motorways are also correct. Google says those detailed maps are now available in 50 new cities worldwide.

3. Busy places

Do you want to jog in the city or take a quiet walk? Soon, Maps will show you at a glance which areas are busier than usual. Active regions are marked in colour, and the text tells you how busy it is. Thanks to this function, you immediately know which parts of the city you want to avoid. On the other hand, this feature can also be helpful for travellers to discover the most vibrant places in a town.

4. Information in Maps based on time

If you zoom in on maps in Maps, you can find helpful places and restaurants. You can see the name and type of business based on a pin. In busy areas in the city, you cannot see all the pins on the screen simultaneously, and Google will now use a system to determine which places appear on your screen.

That depends on the time of day. For example, you are more likely to see coffee shops than places to dine extensively in the morning. Of course, you can also find restaurants in Maps in the morning because then you have to zoom in even more on the location of the relevant business.
