Are you still working from home (whether out of necessity or personal preference), or about to do so? If so, you could be convinced that your current laptop just isn’t enough to help you with the task. Fortunately, the tablet computer market has progressed hugely in recent years, making a tablet a truly viable alternative to a laptop.

Here is a selection of the best productivity-oriented slates currently on the market. No matter what type of office work you take on in your humble abode, you could find a tablet to suit.

Microsoft Surface Pro X

Windows 10 is the standard choice of operating system for many workers – and, fortunately, the Microsoft Surface Pro X comes with Windows 10 Home preinstalled. However, that only begins to explain the immense appeal of this 2-in-1 tablet, which also runs on a zippy SQ1 processor.

Despite having a 13-inch touchscreen and back-mounted folding kickstand, the X is only 7.3mm thin and weighs less than a couple of pounds, leading The Balance Small Business to recommend it for travel – however few opportunities for that you might currently have…

Microsoft Surface Pro 7

While the Surface Pro 6 is still available and now for less than its launch price, if you want a Surface slate that will last you for the long haul, you might be better off with the Surface Pro 7, given its beefier processor and added USB-C connectivity in comparison to the device’s predecessor.

These are all subtle improvements, as is the included support for the high-speed Wi-Fi 6 standard – but they could all add up if you want an especially future-proof Windows slab.

HP Spectre x360 14

If you – rather than the company – will be funding the purchase of your tablet, you could be willing to splurge on the high-end HP Spectre x360 14. In her review for The Verge, Monica Chin hails this device as “the best 2-in-1 you can buy”, particularly praising its stunning design – “this Spectre feels like artwork” – and excellent battery life found to average ten hours.

Apple iPad Pro (12.9-inch, 2020 model)

Last year, Apple brought out the latest version of its iPad Pro line, coincidently on the cusp of the pandemic’s outbreak – and the 12.9-inch model is a real beauty, too. Its large, high-resolution touchscreen makes this tablet an amazing canvas for artists and designers, especially those who have the Apple Pencil.

While iPadOS isn’t exactly the strongest candidate for the “most business-friendly OS” gong, that doesn’t have to matter too much when cybersecurity tools like Wandera’s are platform-agnostic.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet (3rd generation)

Lenovo’s ThinkPad range is too easily overlooked in modern discussions about enterprise-friendly tablets – but TechRadar calls this, the third-generation iteration of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet, “one of the best business tablets around”. It helps that you wouldn’t need to buy any peripherals for it…

That’s because all of the peripherals you would need are included with the 3K-resolution-touchscreen tablet itself – from the detachable keyboard to the ThinkPad Pen Pro stylus.
